I had no idea what to expect from Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, but as I stepped into the lobby, I thought that it was just a mid-sized resort. But as soon as I was ushered to a golf cart that would take me to my room I realized I was wrong. The resort, at 11 hectares, is huge. But since the whole place is almost circular, walking from one place to another is a breeze.
I was booked at a Lagoon View Room in the Nile Hall. As the name suggests, I had an awesome view of the man-made lagoon. The room was simple, but it was complete with a very comfortable bed, a cable TV, and—what I deem to be the most important aspect in any hotel room—a clean and spacious restroom with a bathtub.
As soon as I was handed a map to the resort (because it’s really huge), I was immediately wowed by the size of the lagoons and pools at the center. I can’t imagine any of the pools getting crowded. While you can’t deny that everything is man-made, I could still appreciate the effort to make everything look natural. The best part? Kilimanjaro Kafé, the resort’s 24-hour dining outlet, is situated right in the middle of it all.
I was very fortunate that Nile Hall was situated right next to Mogambo Springs and I took advantage of this by booking a massage. Before the treatment, I was also able enjoy the many facilities—the hot and cold water pools, the steam room, and the sauna. While these were in the public area, my massage was held in my own little private hut. I actually don’t remember much of the massage as my thoughts drifted away while it was happening, but I do remember feeling very refreshed afterwards.

I was only booked for an overnight stay, so when it was time to check out, I was really happy about my experience, but I definitely wanted more. Perhaps a weeklong stay would have been better so I could have experienced the many other activities the resort has to offer.
Plantation Bay is perfect for families and groups who are not too fussy when it comes to accommodations. The resort is not five-star, but the staff is very upfront about their facilities and services that it’s very improbable for guests to be disappointed with their experience.
