Turning Pages in Alaska
Alaska, the largest territory of the United States, is a state located in the far remote corner of North America.
Initially occupied by the Russian Empire up until the historical Alaska Purchase in 1897, Alaska is home to the some of the world’s richest natural resources nested between the locals making a humble living, which is why traversing its great landscapes will make for a great way to start the year. Interminable waterfronts and pristine waters are abundant throughout the five regions of Alaska, which is where you can also find top of the line cruise ships, untouched vistas, and world-class hospitality.
One of their famous port towns is Seward, found in the Kenai Peninsula and is home to the only ice-free port in the country. Seward offers different activities like kayaking, sailing, and fishing as well as hiking and mountaineering through the Kenai Fjords National Park. While you’re in the area, scout through the quaint boroughs of Nikolaevsk and Ninilchik. Both villages have a combined population of a thousand and have continued to maintain a strong sense of tradition evident in their Russian Orthodox churches.
Tour inside the abandoned coppers mines of Kennecott, masterfully preserved its closure in 1938. The mines are
accessed through the borough of McCarthy where shuttle services are available for tourists. If you’re looking for feats of engineering, look no further than the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
Constructed in 1974, the structure is considered the world’s largest crude oil pipeline system. Visitors wanting to see the Trans-Alaska Pipeline can get a view of the entire thing, which stretches from Prudhoe Bay and ends in Valdez City, on an observation deck located at Fairbanks. And lastly, if you’re looking for some thrill, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve makes for a perfect camping spot. Campers can look forward to hunting, fishing, kayaking, rafting, and mountaineering within the vast glacial terrain.
